Winthrop

Travel the North Cascades Scenic Highway and visit Winthrop, eastern Washington's historic old west town. Golfing, shopping, dining, biking, hiking, mountain-climbing, boating, and cross-country skiing.

Winthrop combines the spirit of the Old West with the classic American small town with its wooden sidewalks and rows of false-fronted buildings intermingled with bakeries and art galleries. The dining suits any taste, and there’s a large variety of accommodation in and around the town. Poet and author Owen Wister lived in Winthrop in the early 1900s and described some of the sights and citizens in his novel "The Virginian." Many of the original buildings built during the mining boom at the end of the 18th-century still survive, including a couple of pioneer log cabins, a newspaper printing shop, and several saloons, and hotels.
