Located just east of Brewster on the Okanogan Scenic Byway, be sure to stop a moment at the Okanogan Interpretive Marker. Learn the interesting area history detailing the establishment of Fort Okanogan in 1811 by David Stuart of the Astor Fur Company. For over thirty years, the fort served as a trading center on the mouth of the Okanogan River. The fort was later owned by the British North Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company. Eventually leading to the colonization of the area, this was the first settlement in what is now the State of Washington. Look out over the area once home to the original fort and ponder its past.
