American Camp

Known for its stunning views, rocky shores and orca whales, San Juan Island is also noted for its place in American history - a British and American standoff in 1859 that was caused by the shooting of a pig and near caused a war.  Visit the former site of the American Camp in the San Juan Island National Historic Park and learn the history of the Pig War.  This camp is located just miles from the English Camp site, also part of this multi-site park.

Study the artifacts from both camps at the American Camp Visitor Center, and view two of the original buildings from the camp.  Spend time outdoors hiking the many trails of the park offering splendid mountain vistas, beach walks and forest strolls.  Watch a re-enactment of this historic event each Saturday during the summer.  Observe the bountiful wildlife of the island, including a plethora of birds, deer, fox and marine life such as whales, seals, porpoises and otters.  For more information, visit the San Juan Island National Historical Park.
