About 12 miles south of Sherman Pass lies the Sherman Creek-Growden Heritage Site. The site is a remnant of the New Deal Era of the 1930s which sought to offset the effects of the great Depression by employing young men in public works projects. This site was home to a unit of the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), as they carved out most of the Forest Service roads, rock structures, and hiking trails in the area. The site is nestled in the foothills between Lake Roosevelt and the Kettle Mountains.
