Follow the historic John Wayne Pioneer Trail first used by Native American hunting parties, followed by European settlers in their covered wagons and lastly as the roadbed of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad. This 100-mile non-motorized trail extends from the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains to the border with Idaho. In the summer, hit the trail for easy hiking, biking, and horseback riding. During the winter months enjoy snowmobiling, dog sledding and cross-country skiing in the snow.
One of several trailheads, begin the pathway at Hyak on Snoqualmie Pass along the Mountains to Sound Greenway. A couple thousand feet from the trailhead enter a 2.1 mile abandoned railroad tunnel that comes out on the other side of the pass attracting tunnel-loving bicyclists and hikers from around the world. From the tunnel, the trail heads east to Keechelus Lake and beautiful mountain scenery.
