Gardner Cave

Named after a bootlegger who discovered the cave in 1899, Gardner Cave is the second longest limestone cave in the state. The cave is located in Crawford State Park near the Canadian border and tours are available Memorial Day through Labor Day. The tour takes in the first 500 feet, just under half the cave's 1,055-foot length. About 70 million years ago this area was covered by a vast ocean. The unique limestone formations found in the cave were formed by remnants of creatures living in that ocean. Formations in the Gardner Cave come in all shapes and sizes and over the years people have given them names like "Nixon," "Christmas Tree," "Fried Eggs," "Queen's Throne" and the "Turkey” to name a few.
