Kendall Creek Salmon Hatchery

This is where it all begins.  Built in 1899, the Kendall Creek Hatchery raises coho and chum salmon as well as steelhead, rainbow and cutthroat trout.  Around 500,000 fall Chinook salmon and 750,000 spring Chinook are also released each year.  Returning salmon are collected; their eggs harvested, and then kept in a series of pens until they are strong enough for release on their journey to the Pacific.  Ponds are full January through May.  Adult fish spawn in October and November.  Visitors are welcome to look out upon the masses of fish and witness the exciting process.  This location is also well-known as a prime spot to watch Bald Eagles during the winter months.  Stop by for a look on your way up the Mt. Baker Scenic Byway.
