Nestled along the shores of the Yakima River, 276-acre Chamna Natural Preserve is an excellent sanctuary for wildlife and humans alike. With over eleven miles of dirt trails it is a serene getaway for joggers, hikers, mountain bikers, and the casual observer. Enjoy the wildlife in the summer and during the winter months, strap on your skiis for great cross country skiing and snow shoeing.

Area Birding
Municipal 276 acres of dense thickets of riparian trees on Yakima River delta, shrub-steppe hillside.
Spring greets arriving nesters: Wood Ducks, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Bullock’s Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Western Kingbirds, and Northern Rough-winged Swallows. Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels soar through fall skies above Downy Woodpeckers’ tap-tap-tapping. Belted Kingfishers chatter from river’s edge.
Paved path leads down toward river. Turn left to 8 mile-trail network. Explore Sand, River and Tree Tunnel trails. Best birding in first 0.5 mile of trails, and slough at east end. From Hwy I-182/Hwy12, take exit 5B (George Washington Way). Turn north onto George Washington Way Drive 0.1 mile. At 1st traffic light, turn left onto Aaron Dr. Turn left again staying on Aaron Dr. Drive 0.6 mile. Turn left onto Jadwin Ave. Drive 0.1 mile (on overpass). At T, turn right onto Carrier Rd. Drive 0.2 mile. Turn right onto Cullum Ave at Chamn’a Natural Area sign. Drive 0.3 mile. Turn left into parking. Order the Sun & Sage Loop Map of the Great Washington State Birding Trail.
