A highly recognized historical landmark, the Ahtanum Mission was built in the early 1850's as a request from Chief Kamaikin to the Catholic priests to familiarize his tribe with Catholicism. In addition to faith teachings, they also taught the Yakima Indians how to grow crops and dig irrigation ditches. The mission still stands and continues to be restored by today's Catholic community.
