Washington is home to dozens of American Indian tribes whose cultural legacies predate statehood by thousands of years. The tribes, their traditions and their beautiful and completely unique arts and crafts live on in the present, in 26 reservations, in tribal centers, interpretive centers, galleries and gatherings across the state. This proud continuity can be found at the Makah Cultural and Research Center at Neah Bay; at the Yakama Nation Museum and Cultural Heritage Center in Toppenish; at the annual Spokane Tribal Fair and Powwow; and among the elk hunting people of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, to name just a few of the places where the native northwest past and present are vibrantly alive and well.
