  • Joseph Gregory Rossano: Mirrored Murrelets

    This show highlights the impact on the Marbled Murrelet, a small sea bird that nests primarily in the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. The installation comprises two hundred mirrored glass birds, created in the Museum of Glass Hot Shop in January, 2008, that will "float" just above the surface of the Museum's mid-level reflecting pool.

    The Visiting Artist Program brings artists from the region and around the world to the Museum of Glass to work with the Hot Shop team to explore, invent and create with glass. After each residency the Museum and the artist select one work of art to be included in the permanent collection. These objects are rotated on and off display throughout the year as new works are created.

  • Joe Feddersen: Vital Signs

    Northwest artist Joe Feddersen is a printmaker, basket weaver, and glass artist who combines traditional forms and symbols drawn from his Native American heritage with contemporary imagery. His highly regarded work explores the relationship of culture and the landscape and urban place markers and indigenous designs. The resulting work is both coolly modern and warmly expressionistic. This touring exhibition includes more than 60 works and is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue.

  • A Concise History of Northwest Art

    The history of Northwest art is rich and complex. How have the unique characteristics of this region shaped the work of artists? What influence have national and international trends had on Northwest art? These questions, as well as the major movements, important figures, and pivotal moments in the art history of the Northwest will be explored in this exhibition. Works will be drawn primarily from the museum's permanent collection and will include work from the mid-1800s to the present day from Washington, Oregon, western Montana, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alaska.

  • The Movement of Impressionism: Europe, America, and the Northwest

    In celebration of their 75th anniversary year, Tacoma Art Museum has organized a series of exhibitions featuring many of the gems of the permanent collection supplemented with key loans. Leading off the series is an exhibition of paintings, prints, and sculpture that explores the impressionist movement and its international influence. Included are works by many well-known French impressionists including Degas, Renoir, Pissarro, and Morisot, as well as impressionists from other countries, such as Whistler, Cassatt, Sorolla, and Pokitonov.

    On Halloween this new exhibition that pays tribute to the imagination of children opens. It showcases 52 glass sculptures designed by children and crafted by professional glass artists in the Museum of Glass Hot Shop. This exhibit' concept began as a temporary educational program that interestingly highlighted the symbiotic relationship between designers and glassblowers who make works of art in glass.
