Scenic Byways

Greetings

Welcome!  It has been a pleasure for me to step into the world of Washington’s scenic byway community this year as your new State Scenic Byway Coordinator.

Strong partnerships with Washington’s smaller communities are in place, as well as partnerships with Tourism, Watchable Wildlife, State and Federal Parks, Washington State Historical Society and many others.

As partners, we share a vision of strengthening the economic vitality of our smaller communities while highlighting and preserving the natural beauty and rich cultural and historical treasures of our state. Dedicated and hardworking grassroots volunteer groups are the heart and soul of America’s Byway program.

I look forward to assisting as your government liaison in a program that fosters recognition and pride in Washington’s communities.

Carrie Sunstrom,
Washington State Department of Transportation

12 Trends in Tourism as presented by Judy Walden

    1) Baby Boomer generation- 4 million turning 50 years old this year. They are changing the landscape, especially considering that they purchase 2nd and 3rd vacation homes.
    2) Group Travel tied to age groups - active seniors, fully guided trips - International groups
    3) Women - as a buying group, especially in adventure tourism. 10-12 women in a group, 27 years old average---wearing size 12
    4) Global Clans -reunions- families (ancestors visiting cemeteries)
    5) Personalization - Make every package personalized in some way. (ring tones, coffee, ipods) everything is customized and made to fit their own style--cruises are already doing this
    6) Food as indulgence - gen xers are 17% of the population, they snack more and do food exploration... premium food and ethnic Those born in 1980s to 1990s - group is into fusion cuisine. Serious about style, themed food, technology of food (science of food)
    7) Personal Comfort - we are weary and want to take a nap, sleep in, go to spa, etc...not as anxious to go, go, go...
    8) Take a sabbatical - Deep restoration - reclaim yourself- every 3 -4 years take a 4 week vacation to reboot (or build a boat)
    9) Definition of vacation is changing---used to be go and see and do, now it is chill out and immerse yourself. Best is combination... something in the day and relaxing in the evening
    10) Search for health and well being - natural and organic foods
    11) Affluence and environmentalism - those with money are also very environmentally aware and ask for high end and are concerned about the environment.
    12) Revitalizing and re-inventing yourselves...The Nature Cure......speaks for itself
